A balanced diet contributes to a healthy lifestyle. Especially fruits and vegetables should be on our daily menu, as they are rich in vitamins and minerals. Not for nothing the German Society for Nutrition (DGE) recommends daily three portions of vegetables and two portions of fruit eat. But beware, even though fruit is very healthy, you should ideally avoid it in the evening. Because fruits such as apples, bananas or grapes contain a lot of fruit sugar, also called fructose, which can cause problems for our body in the evening.
Why you shouldn’t eat fruit in the evening
1. Eating late fruit keeps you awake
Fructose in fruit is one of the simple sugars that provide quick energy. But especially in the evening or just before going to bed, too much energy keeps us awake and doesn’t make us sleep. Therefore, it is best to eat sugary fruit in the morning. In yogurt or porridge, it gives you a lot of energy and keeps you full for longer! If you have fruit in the evening, you should use low-sugar varieties such as blueberries, raspberries, papaya, or grapefruit. A handful is a good guide for serving size.
2. Fruit causes indigestion in the evening
Eating fruit overdue also affects our digestion, which has to recover in the evening. Often the fruit can no longer be digested properly at the end of the day, so it remains in the large intestine. There it can ferment and cause swelling.
If you have a sensitive stomach and are prone to heartburn, you should definitely not eat sugary and sour fruit in the evening, as it promotes belching of stomach acid. If you’ve eaten fruit in the evening, you shouldn’t lie down directly, as this promotes heartburn. A short walk, on the other hand, stimulates digestion and gives relief. Additionally, teas such as chamomile or peppermint are tried and tested home remedies for gastrointestinal upset. They have a calming effect and stimulate digestion.
Basically, the following applies: Your body can digest low-sugar types of fruit better in the evening. These include blueberries, raspberries, papaya, watermelon or apricots. Don’t eat more than a handful, though.

3. Fruit in the evening can make you fat
In the long run, excessive consumption of sugary fruit can promote weight gain. Since our body is no longer able to convert the entire amount of fructose into energy in the evening, excess carbohydrates are turned into fat in the liver. This fat goes back into the bloodstream and is stored in our cells.
Alternative snacks for the evening
Alternatively, you can have a variety of other snacks in the evening that are healthy and won’t stop you from sleeping. Ideally, you should eat protein-rich meals. Eggs, lean fish, tofu or low-fat dairy products such as low-fat quark are therefore suitable. They fill you up and stimulate your metabolism.
