Cleaning Products: What Makes Them Sustainable?

Wash, rinse, scrub: our homes are cleaned every day. According to estimates, more than 200,000 tons of household detergents and more than 250,000 tons of dish soap are purchased in Germany every year. In recent years, more and more people have been cleaning with sustainable detergents. But why is this so and what actually makes cleaners sustainable?

Why clean sustainably?

Many detergents contain chemical ingredients such as fragrances, preservatives or so-called surfactants, which according to the Federal Environment Agency are harmful. The bad thing: after cleaning, they enter the groundwater directly through the drain and thus pollute our drinking water.

Also, chemical cleaners can have a negative effect on our health. For example, the surfactants contained, which are supposed to increase the cleaning effect of the agents, irritate the mucous membranes and are suspected to cause allergies and skin rashes. A long-term Norwegian study found that both professional and private cleaning can adversely affect lung function. The Federal Environment Agency therefore recommends avoiding the use of special cleaning agents if possible. The recommendation is: “You can clean the whole house with an all-purpose cleaner, a dish soap, an abrasive detergent and an acidic citric acid based cleaner.”

Cleaning Products: What Makes Them Sustainable?

Sustainable detergents are characterized by the fact that they contain only environmentally friendly substances and that environmental resources are saved during their production. Packaging also plays a role. Most cleaning products are sold in plastic bottles: packaging waste is saved with more sustainable cleaning products, for example thanks to refills. Sustainable cleaning agents can be recognized mainly by their corresponding seals. These include the Blue Angelswhich identifies particularly environmentally friendly products that Ecocert And Nature care product standard (NCP), environmental labels for detergents and cleaners and the European Ecolabel, which identifies environmentally friendly products. But you can also find the ingredients on the packaging – pay special attention to the information about possible health risks and the labels of hazardous substances on the respective product.

For the sake of your health, you should also avoid substances that can harm it. Very acidic or alkaline agents should be avoided as they can cause skin irritation. The same goes for solvent-based cleaners, as they make the air in the room worse.
