Summer 2022: avoid 3 nutritional errors

Summer is many people’s favorite season – after all, temperatures are rising so that after work we can sit in the evening sun and have a barbecue with friends or swim in the outdoor pool or lake on weekends. Unfortunately, the heat also has disadvantages: for example, it can affect our sleep or cause circulatory problems and headaches. We should also change some eating habits when the temperature is high.

In general, in summer, especially when the temperature is around 30 degrees, we should eat light foods and smaller portions, as heavy and high-fat foods put a strain on our body. Their digestion draws energy from us and also produces heat. We will also explain to you what else needs to be considered to support our body.

1. Few fruit and vegetables

In the summer, we lose a lot of fluids through sweating, which increases our need for fluids. To prevent dehydration, we must not only drink enough water, but also make sure we eat enough fruits and vegetables. Many varieties, such as watermelon, cucumber, tomatoes, strawberries, or zucchini, have a high water content. The various types of fruit and vegetables also provide important vitamins and minerals that support our body.

2. Eat low in salt

We are all aware that too much salt is unhealthy: it is not for nothing that the German Society for Nutrition (DGE) recommends not exceeding the daily amount of 6 grams of salt, which corresponds to about a teaspoon. Unfortunately, many people in this country consume too much salt, the average per capita salt consumption in Germany is between 8 and 10 grams. And not without consequences: Eating salt puts a strain on our kidneys and can also cause high blood pressure, which is why we should stick to the amount specified by the DGE. In summer, however, we need more salt due to sweat loss, which is why we can add a little more salt when temperatures are high.

3. Avoid spicy foods

You often read that you should avoid spicy foods in the summer, but that’s not entirely true. The chili pepper in particular makes you sweat due to the capsaicin it contains, but this also triggers a cooling reaction in the body because it affects the heat receptors in the mouth. If you like it, you don’t have to do without Thai curry and co. Another plus: chillies contain antibacterial ingredients and stimulate circulation.
