Why alternatives to sugar?
Sugar is an unhealthy fattening factor – many people are aware of this. Regular consumption can therefore lead to obesity, cause tooth decay, increase the risk of diabetes, promote cardiovascular disease and damage to blood vessels and organs. For this reason, more and more people are trying to avoid sugar or (presumably) healthier alternatives such as Stevia, coconut blossom sugar, agave syrup and honey for a change But even with these products it is important to take a closer look. Below we explain the most popular sugar alternatives and look at both their advantages and disadvantages. We also present the products that performed best in the Öko-Test:

coconut blossom sugar
Particularly appreciated is the coconut blossom sugar, with its fine note of malt and caramel, particularly tasty and often used to sweeten desserts and teas. As the name suggests, coconut blossom sugar is obtained from the flowers of the coconut palm. Sugar can be exchanged 1: 1 with conventional household sugar. However, the sugar alternative is not suitable for baking, as it can become lumpy in the dough. In terms of calories, the sugar from coconut blossoms also makes a big difference. 100 grams has around 380 calories. The same amount of table sugar only has a little more, around 400 calories. However, coconut blossom sugar is only supposed to cause a slower rise in blood sugar – this has not yet been scientifically proven. The higher mineral content is also often touted. However, high amounts should be consumed to benefit from it.
Liquid gold, also known as honey, is often used to sweeten desserts and cakes. Unlike table sugar, the natural product has significantly healthier minerals. Particularly noteworthy are its antioxidants, which are anti-inflammatory and protect our body from harmful free radicals. However, honey is not a slimming product: liquid gold has about 320 grams of calories per 100 grams, which are largely made up of glucose and fructose. Another sticking point: Since honey raises your blood sugar level, you should always consume it in moderation.
Made from agave juice, agave syrup has proved to be a popular plant-based sugar alternative in recent years. Compared to table sugar, agave syrup has fewer calories. 100 grams has about 310. However, there are also some critical aspects with the alternative: agave syrup is made up mainly of fructose and glucose. Although fructose may seem healthy, excessive consumption is bad for your health and can affect your metabolism, among other things. The consequences are overweight, obesity, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes. Another sticking point is its CO₂ balance: since thick juice is imported from South America, it has come a long way.
