Travel sustainably with these 5 tips

The Lufthansa Group recently made negative news in relation to sustainability. The company carried out a total of 18,000 empty flights in order not to lose any traffic rights. With 380 g of CO₂ per km, the plane is one of the most damaging means of transport for the climate. But travel and sustainability are not mutually exclusive. There are alternatives that are not only good for the environment, but can also make travel easier for people.

Holidays 2022: travel sustainably with these 5 tips

1. Find out about regional travel destinations

Harz, the Baltic Sea, the Alps, lakes or centuries-old cities – for a great vacation you don’t always have to go to Bali, the Bahamas or South Africa. Germany also has a lot to offer. And: Most travel destinations can be reached comfortably and climate-friendly by train. How about a trip to Halligen in the North Sea, for example? Or with a break in the Mecklenburg Lake District? Regional travelers are doing the climate a favor and can also discover completely new corners of their country. Plus, a regional vacation is usually easy on the wallet.

2. Pack light bags

Be honest – we tend to stuff too much into our suitcase or travel bag. But just for a short vacation you don’t need almost 15 T-shirts and as many shoes. If you pack in a minimalist way, it will be easier in the truest sense of the word. In addition, light luggage is much more environmentally friendly. Why: Due to the additional weight, each sweater increases your personal CO₂ balance. Additional tip: If you roll up your clothes, pack in a particularly space-saving and wrinkle-free way.

3. Use digital offers

City maps, tickets, booking confirmations: 20 years ago, traveling required a lot of paperwork. Today, the results of digitization save a lot of paper. For example, tickets for trains, buses, trains and planes can be purchased via mobile phone, transported and displayed, booking confirmations for hotels, rental cars and the like usually arrive by email. Plans and city maps are also available on your smartphone at any time and can also be downloaded in advance. This way you will never lose your bearings, with or without a secure internet connection.

4. Prepare a drinking bottle

A reusable water bottle belongs to every backpack and travel bag. The reason? With refillable bottles you save a lot of plastic waste, caused by common 0.5 liter plastic bottles. For example, sustainable water bottles in chic design, in glass or stainless steel are available. But be careful: The quality of tap water varies depending on the destination. Tap water is not safe for drinking in all countries. It is best to do some research in advance to avoid any nasty surprises later on.

5. Book sustainable accommodation

Meanwhile, some hotels in Germany have specialized on the topic of sustainability: they use green electricity, stock up on regional food and pay attention to environmentally friendly materials and construction methods. Ergo: Those who book a sustainable organic hotel uphold the underlying philosophy and do something for the climate.
